TV Storyboards: Title & Show Ident Graphics

Anatomy of an Ident:
Here's a previs storyboard I made for the title sequence for BARBARIANS RISING.
Rather than hand-drawn, this one's a mix of comped elements from real references and digital painting. It's a great way of nailing down ideas when visual effects are involved.

Notebooks, grid ruler, twisty pencils, a brush pen, 5B and up pencils, gel pens, markers, and erasers. Never leave home without them.

Props Graphic: The Kraken

Prop graphic design:

I designed this book that our main character Niko is reading in feature film The Winter.

We've even had a few people ask where they can buy it to read it.

Short Film Storyboards: Twist-Tie

Working up some storyboards for a short film project. It's a comical, quirky film, so I'm finishing with some colour to give them character. Getting back to watercolour and ink brush this month on a few projects. Good for a chunky graphic style.

Sci-Fi Feature Film Pitch: Black & White Storyboards

Some quick boards for a short film animatic - these will be used for a Kickstarter pitch.  The theme is Lovecraft in outer space. We went for a really dynamic look, with strong contrast.  Markers, ink, pens, a bit of digital in this style.

Media Mania: Markers

As a passionate user of watercolour, and a frequent digital board artist, it's always nice to work in a new media.  I've been working on a job this month that needed to be in marker to match with previous shots, and it's been a nice change.

Starting with toned greys and ink, I then used the same technique for the base of digitally painted design renderings. Quick and simple, easy to use when I'm working away from my desk.  What's not to love?

Nutopia
Storyboard Artist for CGI

Built in parallel with their other ambitious history documentary 'The British', I arrived late in the process to help out with storyboards for the CGI sequences during the edit.  The shear scale of the project is incredible, covering human existence and achievement across the planet.

Feature Film Storyboards: 'Shaking Dreamland'

When Robert marries the beautiful Alice they are the 'perfect couple'. But the moment he learns his wife is pregnant, dark secrets from the past fly unbidden into the present and threaten to destroy their future.

Working closely with director Martina, we developed the psychological environments that reflect the descent from happy family life to a darker, more dangerous nightmare.

The images were hand-painted with watercolour and ink, acrylic, or pencil/chalk. We also developed initial concept art to define the romantic/impressionistic mood of the film.

Sci-Fi Storyboarding: Feature Film 'The Simulation

'The Simulation' is sci-fi feature set in the science lab of an underground bunker in an alternative reality. Death, armageddon, and obsessive experimentation lead to disaster.

For the pitch storyboards, we wanted a bold, blocky style to the graphics, with a nod to comic books, for the development of the film.

What’s the first storyboard you ever drew?

My very first storyboard project: Equinox, Feature Film.

Coming from a theatrical design background, breaking down the fourth wall to create visuals any angle was a huge shift in perspective.
Some of these boards were used in an old-west style animatic sequence in the film.  The look is rough and expressionistic, with loose watercolour washes and scratchy ink.
The final image was the tattoo style crossed guns.

Style Test: Pencil Storyboards for Factual/Realistic TV

After several years of predominantly watercolour and ink based storyboards, I got the chance to test out a totally new approach to working.

For the Nutopia/Sky Atlantic factual series 'The British', we had the challenge of covering 2000 years of history across 7 episodes. To help the 3D artists accurately realise the extensive VFX sequences, a very realistic style of storyboard is needed.

I drew these sample tests to check how the pencil would look. After scanning, the tone is tinted blue, which reminds me of blue print copies we used to make of drafting.  It’s great for creating tone across landscapes.

A Little Hitchcock Noir

Hitchcock quickly became my favorite director when I discovered the unrated ‘Classics’ section at Blockbuster Video at about age 12. Since they weren’t restricted, I happily made my way through ‘Vertigo’, ‘Rope’, ‘The Birds’ and anything else I could get my hands on.   It didn’t help that you could watch Alfred Hitchcock Presents on the kids’ channel Nickelodeon at night, and that my grade school had Daphne Du Maurier and some horror books of questionable appropriateness hiding in the shelves. (I certainly wasn’t complaining, and devoured them all.)

In creating my own animations, it was early Hitchcock and Film Noir for inspiration (espcially ‘No 17’).  Set around the elevated train tracks of Chicago, this short was a blast. When my instructor had viewed it, he commented, ‘There’s something very wrong with you,’ and I felt like I achieved my desired effect.

‘Noir’ features inkwash and pen storyboards, setting the mood and camera angles for this murderous, quickie suspense.

Shakespeare-Style, Storyboarding Love: Feature Film Star Crossed

Based on Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, set in modern-day Portugal. Star Crossed is a romance set amidst the fictional rivalry between two of Portugal's most prominent football teams (Invicta and Castelo), when mutual disdain has spread further than the pitch.

For 'Star Crossed' - I produced watercolour storyboards to evoke the mood and vivid locations for the film
